At Cedar Brook Garden Center we like to remind you to feed the birds this winter. It may be a mild winter but flowers seeds and pine nuts are thinning out for the birds, As soon as snow hits it will cover many seeds birds need to thrive the winter. With all the seed out on the market what do you feed them? Here is a short list what birds like for the winter.
Thistle( Nyjer) is for gold finch love this also, Siskins, Redpolls and small song birds. I keep this out all year long. Use a small hole tub feeder and keep clean. What falls on ground small wrens eat up.
Safflower perfect to a tract Cardinals, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Blue Jays but not the grackles or squirrels. An important seed for the oil and energy needed to keep the colorful birds in your yard. Larger hole tube feeder works great.
Sunflower come small black or larger stripped. This is the most important seed to have for oil and high energy. Easy seed to crack for most birds. Same birds as safflower but add the Titmice and Grosbeaks to the list.
Peanuts are favored by the woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees and Titmice. Use a large hole tub feeder or open fly by feeder. I love seeing the colorful woodpeckers this time of year.
Corn is a filler seed but important to have in the mix. Sprinkle on ground or open tray feeders. Out in the county we get the pheasant’s in to grab some kernels if the feeder is place away from the house or on the ground.
Most mixes will have an assortment. The more expensive the mix the more sunflower and peanuts are added. Some mixes use berry juice to sweeten the seed and add more energy.
We carry all the seeds in solid bags or mixed and in suet cakes. The cake are a favorite of birds when is is very cold because of the added fat for them to peck into. Remember always to use clean feeders and monitor the seed so feeders do not run out to assure birds keep coming to your yard to watch. Birds also need fresh water and shelter for winter. Use your fresh Christmas tree out side for winter if you do not have evergreens in your yard for them. Bird feeders are great Christmas gifts too! Enjoy winter while watching the Birds. Sale on feed and feeder till Dec 31.
